Africa has always had a way of telling love stories through music, and the 90s and 2000s gave us some of the most memorable anthems that still have us swooning. From the sweet serenades to the danceable love songs, these tracks are woven into the fabric of our lives. Let’s dive into some of the timeless African love songs from these golden eras, the tracks that still tug at the heartstrings even today.

African Queen – 2Face Idibia (2004)

Who can forget African Queen? 2Face Idibia gave us one of the most iconic love songs ever to come out of Africa. The melody was as smooth as butter, and the lyrics? Pure magic. Every line in this song is an ode to that one special woman, making anyone who listened feel like royalty.

As one of the most timeless African love songs, African Queen took African music global and even landed a spot on the soundtrack of Phat Girlz, a Hollywood movie. It’s a song that made sure love, as simple as it was described, felt majestic.

Angel of My Life – Paul Play Dairo (2005)

Angel of My Life by Paul Play Dairo is that song that instantly transports you to a time when love was sweet, simple, and full of promises. The R&B tune was a favorite at weddings and it’s easy to see why.

Paul Play’s smooth vocals and emotive delivery made it one of the most celebrated love songs of the 2000s. This song still brings waves of nostalgia for many who lived through its reign on the airwaves.

Never Far Away – Lagbaja (2005)

Known for his enigmatic masks and rich fusion of Afrobeat and jazz, Lagbaja surprised many with this beautiful love ballad. Never Far Away is proof that love can be expressed in the simplest yet most profound ways. It is a beautifully crafted love song by the masked musician Lagbaja, featuring the soulful vocals of Ego.

In this song, Lagbaja tells the story of love that transcends distance, a reassuring message that love can be a constant even when miles apart. The smooth saxophone and heartfelt lyrics made this a classic that fans still adore today.

Mina Ngithanda  Brenda Fassie (1996)

This song is a declaration of love that showcases her signature boldness and charisma. Released during the height of Brenda Fassie’s career, the song blends infectious Afro-pop rhythms with heartfelt lyrics about the intensity of love.

In her powerful and unmistakable voice, Brenda Fassie sings about being deeply in love, capturing the joy, passion, and excitement that comes with it. Her delivery is both playful and emotional, making the song a timeless favorite.

One Love – Onyeka Onwenu (1991)

Onyeka Onwenu’s One Love became a pan-African anthem of unity and peace, but at its heart, it’s also a love song for humanity. With her angelic voice, Onyeka Onwenu paints a picture of love that transcends personal relationships and speaks to the need for compassion and togetherness.

Released in the 90s, this track remains timeless in its message, reminding us that love is the bond that can heal the world. And even now, after Onyeka Onwenu’s untimely demise, this iconic song lives on.

Olufunmi – Styl Plus (2003)

The early 2000s wouldn’t have been complete without Olufunmi by Styl Plus, the boy band that had Nigeria and beyond in a chokehold. Olufunmi was one of their breakout hits, and it encapsulated everything about young love: the longing, the passion, and, sometimes, the heartache.

As one of the most iconic African love songs, it’s a track you’ll still hear at parties and gatherings even in 2024, years after its release.

Ten Times Love – Jabu Khanyile & Bayete Bayete (1993)

This South African classic by Jabu Khanyile is a soulful celebration of love. The unique blend of South African rhythms with traditional elements and playful percussion makes Ten Times Love an incredible song from the 90s.

This is one of the most nostalgic African love songs you can add to your playlist today. It speaks about love that multiplies, love that grows stronger over time. It’s the kind of song that makes you sway, close your eyes, and reflect on the power of enduring affection.

I’m In Love With A DJ – Yvonne Chaka Chaka (1987)

Yes, I know this song was technically released in the late 80s, but I couldn’t resist adding it to the list. Yvonne Chaka Chaka, often referred to as the Princess of Africa, gave us a fun and flirty love song with I’m In Love With A DJ

This song was an instant hit in the 80s and even in the 90s because it combined Yvonne’s Chaka Chaka’s signature vibrant energy with a love story that many could relate to—falling for the person who brings the music to life.

Love Me Jeje – Seyi Sodimu ft. Shaffy Bello (1997)

Closing our list is Seyi Sodimu’s Love Me Jeje, featuring the elegant vocals of Shaffy Bello. The soft beats, combined with Seyi’s rich vocals and Shaffy’s sonorous delivery, made this a favorite across Africa.

Listening to it today invokes an incredible wave of nostalgia that reminds me of a time where love was simpler. And of course, Tems did an incredible job of sampling this iconic song in her most recent rendition of Love Me Jeje. But for now, let’s throw it back to the original.

These songs continue to capture hearts, years after their release. They’re memories, emotions, and stories that have shaped the African music scene.
