Its another week and another opportunity to pick our top five songs from the numerous releases we had in the previous week. Bloody Civilian, Tay Iwar, and Iyanya gave us new EPs and we also got a new album from Seyi Vibez. As if that wasn’t enough, some of our faves gave us fresh new singles to bop to. Artistes like Simi, Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Psycho YP, and so much more. Let’s get right into it, here’s this week’s edition of Soot weekly song picks.
Pick Up – Tiwa Savage
When Tiwa released the teaser for this song, I was already in love with it. Pick Up is an easygoing, Afropop song with an extremely catchy chorus that Tiwa Savage delivers with her unique flair. Its colourful visuals make it even more interesting to listen to. In no time, I bet you’ll find yourself singing along to the chorus like you’ve known the song your entire life. Furthermore, is this Soot weekly song pick a contender for a summer anthem? This writer thinks it just might be.
Suddenly – Seyi Vibez ft Young John
Off the recently released album Vibe Till Thy Kingdom Come, this song feels like a cool refresher after a long day. Additionally, the start of the song pulls the listener in, and it only gets better from there. Seyi Vibez incorporates enough log drums in the song to make it an interesting listen, and Young John delivers a fine performance as well.
Not My Fault – Psycho YP X Ajebo Hustlers
This song made it to our Soot weekly song picks for two major reasons; Its unique top lines certainly pique the listener’s attention and rope you in quickly. Secondly, Ajebo Hustlers did not sound as out of place on this Alte dominant track as you would expect. As usual, they certainly played around with funny lyrics and gave us smooth delivery as well.
Stranger – Simi
Ah yes, how have I missed slow, soul-singing Simi? These days we don’t get to see much of her, and that’s who I fell in love with in the first place. On Stranger, Simi delivers an emotionally compelling love song in what must be one of the finest vocal performances I’ve heard this year. The lyrics are even more brilliant and emotionally vulnerable, driving listeners almost to the point of tears, or maybe a sniffle or two. If you’re going through a tough time at the moment, you might want to skip this one.
Mad Apology – Bloody Civilian
From the newly released Anger Management EP, this Soot weekly song pick is easily one of my favourite releases from the previous week. Bloody Civilian doesn’t shy away from giving the audience something different, and she works her way seamlessly throughout the length of the song. What’s more? A hook that you’ll want to keep on repeat in the meantime. It should be no surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed this song. If you’re a fan of good music, you will too.
That marks the end of our Soot weekly song picks for today. I must say we certainly had a number of great releases this week, so much so that it was hard to pick favourites. If your favourite didn’t make it to our list, let us know in the comments!
