Soot Weekly Picks

Soot Weekly Picks

It wouldn’t be a complete week without our Soot weekly picks, would it? We’ve had new music from Chike, Joeboy, Preye, Erigga, and countless others. Welcome to another edition of the top new songs that caught our radar this week.

Chike – On Fire ( Pana Time)

Made for the recently released “Gangs of Lagos” movie, On Fire takes a different approach from the regular Chike sound. It’s upbeat, fast-paced, and definitely has nothing to do with love, as is common with a lot of Chike songs. While it was surprising to hear Chike on a song like this, it was definitely pleasantly done.

A few minutes into the song, Chike delivers an Igbo rap verse and it sounds like he’s been doing it forever. I was going to save “Gangs of Lagos” for later this week, but I’m dying to see how well this song played into the movie.

Johnny Drille – Believe me

If you saw the video Johnny Drille posted with his new boo thang, you’ll probably understand why this song puts you in all the feels. Accordingly, Johnny Drille compels persistent love and strong emotions in Believe Me.

This also song tells a story of a lover desperately pleading his case with his significant other. “Believe me, e gats be you. I need you for my family.” He even goes as far as saying “If I fall your hand, abeg delete me.” I don’t know about you, but any man that comes at me with so much assurance definitely has my attention.

Preye – Cotton Candy (Sweet like)

“Your love is like St. Louis on my tongue.” Firstly, Preye’s “Cotton Candy” does little to quell the emotions Johnny Drille’s “Believe Me” triggers. Secondly, this new song is a soft tune that basically sounds every bit as sweet as the name indicates. Preye’s intoxicating voice just about grazes your senses and takes you on an exciting journey.

“Cotton Candy” paints several pictures in the mind of its listeners. Pictures of slow, intimate nights where time stands still. Additionally, you can tell Preye had a lot of fun with this song, she plays around with notes and delivers beautiful soul music that has made me fall in love with her voice even more

Joeboy – Duffel Bag

This song just made me want to ask Joeboy “Where’s the album???” Duffel Bag is a follow-up single to his 2023 album “Body and Soul”. If the aim was to get fans excited about the album, I think it does a fine job. But first off, let’s talk about the production.

Produced by E Kelly and Timmy, Duffel Bag significantly pulls the listener’s attention from the moment the beat drops. Its short staccato bursts of drums and piano bits make it a unique song that unquestionably had me sold. I can’t wait to hear what else Joeboy has in store for us with the rest of the album.

Erigga – Pot Of Stew

We’ve had soul music, Afro-pop, and some R&B variations. Now, it’s only right to end the list with rap. Erigga certainly had something cooking with Pot of Stew. This song chiefly features Erigga’s prayer for success and favorable progress in a country like Nigeria.

It certainly sounds like the kind of song you play in the morning to give you the energy and motivation you need for the day. Additionally, Erigga preaches staying focused on God only and working hard to seek out better days. “New Benz Amen, new crib Amen. Na good life I Dey find, no be pot of stew.”

Amen preacher Erigga, Amen.
