Our week would never be complete without giving our lovely audience new song suggestions they should listen to. From the hundreds of new African songs released this past week, we finally settled on five songs we know you’ll love. With new releases from Patoranking, Fireboy DML, Oxlade, Cavemen, and more, here are this week’s Soot Africa top new song picks. Hint; there will be a bonus pick at the end; stick around to find out!
Patoranking X Popcaan – Tonight
In a lovely reemergence from Patoranking, the first Soot Africa’s top new song is Tonight, released in collaboration with Popcaan. If there’s one thing about a Patoranking song, it’ll have you toe-tapping in no time, and Tonight is no different.
The Popcaan feature was absolutely genius. This song employs a little bit of Dancehall and Afrobeats. These are two elements Popcaan usually has no trouble merging into his sound. This sounds like a song we might be hearing all summer long.
Drink Water – Jon Batiste ft. Jon Bellion & Fireboy DML
Call it the Afrobeats bug or something in the air, but there are now more international song features than ever. The next piece on Soot Africa’s top new song picks is Drink Water, by Jon Batiste featuring Jon Bellion and Fireboy DML.
Drink Water is the epitome of a modern pop song; a vibrant intro that Jon Bellion has no trouble delivering and a catchy verse from Jon Batiste. I wondered how well Fireboy would do on this track, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear his sublime verse.
This crossover event (for lack of a better choice of words) between the world of Pop music and Afrobeats will bring two very different audiences and merge them as one. This, of course, is nothing short of a testament to the power of music. Without a doubt, Drink Water might also be another contender for a summer song.
Saviour – Cavemen
From the kings of modern Highlife, the next piece on Soot Africa’s top new song picks is Saviour by Cavemen. From the song’s first line, you already know the Cavemen will take you on a hilarious lyrical journey throughout this song.
Need I say more? The song speaks about a love interest that tries to put these men on a pedestal, calling them to rescue her from one trouble or another now and then. How do the Cavemen respond to this? “Savior, savior, I can’t be your savior. Let me be.” I had a good laugh at this one, as I’m sure you will too.
Ogaranya – Adekunle Gold
Have you heard? Tio Tequila is coming! From the upcoming album Tequila Ever After, Adekunle Gold’s alter ego, Tio Tequila, delivers yet another hit song, Ogranaya, and it would certainly be a crime for us not to put it on Soot Africa’s top new song picks.
This new song is everything Tio Tequila has promised to be; fun, fresh, new, and ridiculously addictive. I bet the fans are even more excited to hear the full album. From Adekunle Gold, to AG Baby, to Tio Tequila. We have no option but to respect one of the finest evolutions in the African music industry. When you hear good music, you have to respect good music.
Intoxicated – Oxlade ft Dave
True to what was mentioned earlier, these international artist features are here to stay. On Intoxicated, Oxlade features Dave, and they undoubtedly create a masterpiece together. These two artists employ fine infusions of Afrobeats, R&B, Rap, and what I would call Afro-soul to certainly make one of the best love songs of 2023.
Oxlade starts with a solid verse and chorus, and Dave finishes with an even more solid rap verse that is best enjoyed when listened to, not read about. This is a collaboration I would very much like to hear again, and I’m willing to bet a lot of fans are in this same boat too.
Introverted – Adam Srae; Soot Africa’s Top New Songs Bonus Pick
I told you we had a bonus at the end. This week’s new releases were so good we didn’t have just five, but six top new song picks and Adam Srae’s Introverted made it to the list. This artiste is one of the most recent stars from MBA for Africa Talent Project, Adam Srae, who also made it to our Twitter spaces last week (if you missed that conversation, you missed out on a lot.)
Firstly, this song is a fine, harmonious cross between a sad, loner boy and a lover boy. Adam Srae gets brutally honest about where his heart lies, at peace, when in his introverted space. Even though the song gets uncannily relatable, it does not sacrifice relatability for originality. Additionally, Adam does a fine job giving a great vocal performance while keeping it fun.
Unfortunately, there are no more additional bonus tracks for Soot Africa’s top new song picks. However, you must agree that this week’s new releases were sublime.
If you had as much fun reading this as I did writing this, say something about it in our comment section and stay glued to Soot Africa for more music updates!
