With all the good music we had this previous week, choosing our Soot Africa top picks was no easy feat. Omah Lay gave us a deluxe edition of Boy Alone. Asake gave us Work of Art, and Sean Tizzle gave us Dues.
We also had impressive new singles from Libianca, Ladipoe, Bella Shmurda, Ckay, Focalistic, and Barry Jhay. The list could go on and on. As usual, we had to settle on our top five. So, strap in and let’s get right into it!
Jah – Libianca
To start off our Soot Africa top picks, the talented Cameroonian star, Libianca, shows off incredible vocals on Jah. It’s not just a song that sounds appealing to the ears though. It also preaches a resounding message about how the singer owes her success and wins to no other but Jah himself. She endears the listeners to put their trust in God too, and hope for the best.
Divine African Woman – Sean Tizzle
Right off his new album Dues, Sean Tizzle finally gives his fans new music, Divine African Woman. As one of our Soot Africa top picks, this is basically a poem of praises for the African woman and I can’t help but to be flattered, being one myself. Sean Tizzle refers to the African woman as a venom and an antidote at the same time. After that, he goes ahead to smother even more praises in Yoruba. Ah yes, I bet all women out there would love listening to this.
Soso – Omah Lay X Ozuna
As if the original song wasn’t already good enough, Omah Lay teams up with Ozuna on a remix of Soso in the deluxe edition of Boy Alone. On this remix, the song certainly maintains its background flutes and whistles and introduces us to new verses by Ozuna, a Puerto Rican rapper. While the two work well together on this track, I can’t help but prefer the original rendition.
Sunshine – Asake
By all indications, Asake did not come to play this year. Off his newly released album, Work of Art, Sunshine employs the typical Asake template but still somehow manages to maintain originality in sound and delivery. Additionally, I was caught by the nostalgic tunes at the start of this Soot Africa top pick and the ever present choristers that never fail to make an appearance in an Asake bop. This pick is definitely one for the books for sure.
Imagine – Omah Lay X Aitch
Imagine is the next Soot Africa top weekly pick which basically takes us on a nice wave of emotions. These emotions portray passionate feelings, vivid imaginations, and hints of regrets targeted at failed relationships. Omah Lay delivers his well paced verse as smoothly as we know him to. On the other hand, Aitch gives a rap verse that fits right into this Soot Africa top pick. Altogether, the two flow well on this Soot Africa top weekly pick and blend their music styles seamlessly to give us an Afro pop song heavily infused with R & B elements.
