Sony Music Sampling Workshop

On the 19th of August 2024, Sony Music Publishing held a music sampling workshop. This event was hosted in Lagos Oriental Hotel, in the heart of Lagos, Nigeria.

The sampling workshop chiefly focused on empowering music enthusiasts on music samples. It enlightens professionals on how to sample songs from history to keep them alive in modern-day music.

During the workshop, Managing Director, Sony Music Publishing, Nigeria/West Africa, Mr Godwin Tom, said, “The Legends project is an important step in publishing because if we protect our past, we ensure that no-one plays with our future.

This further buttresses the important role music publishing plays in making seemingly lost music available and accessible to anyone and everyone across the globe.

To add to that, Godwin Tom also said, “There is something bigger than Afrobeats, and it is who we are. Afrobeats is not just a genre, Afrobeats is certainly a mix of African language, culture and music.”

As a testament to this, Sony Music Publishing announced the signing of five legendary artists. As part of the sampling workshop, participants will get to explore the catalogs of these artists to see how they have been reintroduced into modern-day Afrobeats through sampling.

As Sony Music Publishing embarks on this new journey, the world can look forward to a renewed appreciation for the rich and diverse sounds of Nigerian music.
