A PLSD Christmas EP Review

The EP opens with a nostalgic song, Holiday is Coming. I remember how we used to sing this back then in Primary school when it is time for the Christmas holidays. “Holiday is coming, no more morning bells, goodbye teachers, goodbye scholars” was sung on high notes that year. The soothing background vocals and instrumentals make it easy to float down memory lane on this track. Love it!

Track 2, Tis the Season, a reggae sound with soft vocals and a sweet saxophone in the background preaches the need to show love and practice communal living this season. It is indeed the season of love, giving, and setting crooked lines straight as the year draws to an end. This should be done alongside tearing apart fleshy chicken wings and juicy turkey thighs.

A snowman, the 3rd track explores a trap sound, and the rappers describe how they would love to “detty” their December, show off their drip too cold like a snowman, icy I see… In the end, Nauty chips in to ask, why don’t we even sing Christmas songs the Nigerian way? Prepare your dancing shoes for this next one.

The Beat-Oven comes through with the Fuji fusion on A Fuji Christmas with Jxted delivering the vocals appreciating God for a successful year and provisions. It is a song of gratitude that makes you just want to move your body. He also declares his blessings for the new year and blessings that will make the enemies envious.

The EP closes with Christmas Feeling and Christmas is here. These songs perfectly describe the Christmas mood. The signature fried rice and chicken on the plate, drinks and games, family and friends around and everyone’s having a good time despite the highs and lows throughout the year. No dieting, and if you are lucky, you get gifts to celebrate the holidays. How will I forget the fireworks and the lighting? The streets be lit up with decorations and beautiful lights to warm the atmosphere. Christmas is here!

Closing Remarks

With the freedom to creatively express and musically interpret the different experiences the members of PLSD have when it comes to the season, each track followed the unspoken rule; to make Christmas music in our way.

PLSD Collective

This is obvious with the genre diversity of each track on the project, ranging from a dramatic, nostalgia-inducing intro to soft reggae, trap, and Fuji, before finally ending with classic Christmas pop music.
