We all know Tyla and how much she impacted African music within her first few years of hitting the spotlight.

Ever since her breakout, Tyla has been everywhere. She’s headlined concerts globally, attended fashion shows all around the world, and has since released her debut album, Tyla. You can read all about her album here.

Recently, Tyla spoke to Vogue about why she does what she does with so much passion. She revealed that she’s passionate about pushing African music, particularly Afrobeats and Amapiano.

“I represent African music. Like, I really push Afrobeats and Amapiano because it’s not something that is fully recognized globally,” Tyla said.

However, the 21-year-old star also admitted that there’s more to her music than just these two genres.

“At the same time, I’m also more than that. I’m able to get an R&B award because R&B has a huge influence on my music. I don’t think I’m an R&B artist but me incorporating it and it being recognized in these places is important.”

“I Should be Able to Win an Afrobeats Award”: Tyla says

In Tyla’s interview with Vogue, the 21-year-old star further added that she should be able to win an award in several other categories, not just Amapiano.

“I should be able to win an Afrobeats award, an R&B award,  and it be okay and not have people be like ‘Oh I thought she was Afrobeats, I thought she was R&B. People can be anything and everything, whatever they’re feeling that day.” Tyla said.

“People should be able to play and fit in every box if they’re in every box,” she concluded.

Tyla released her hit eponymous album in March 2024. The deluxe was released later that year in October, with three more tracks added to it.

Staying true to her word, Tyla’s music doesn’t just border around Afrobeats and Amapiano alone. Her most recent song, “Push 2 Start” is a global hit. It certainly didn’t fit into the Afrobeats and Amapiano box, but however, featured more R&B and pop rhythms. It has even been dubbed “The Song of the Summer.” She also released a remix featuring Sean Paul Read all about it here.
