22-year-old Faith Adegboye, also known as Mösirè, is an exciting and uber talented singer-songwriter based in Lagos, Nigeria whose creative talents extend beyond music, to fashion, beauty, and art.
Mösirè is an artist whose love for exploring various music styles and genres, has helped her to create a unique sound that appeals to a broad audience. She draws inspiration from different musical genres and cultures, skillfully blending elements of Afrobeats, Dancehall, R&B, Soul, and Reggae into her music.
Soot Africa had a chance to take a peek into Mösirè’s mind as an artist and we had quite the insightful conversation.
Mösirè, could you share with us how your journey into music began?
I’ve always loved writing and making music. I used to make covers and post them on IG, and at that time, I didn’t have a thought of going pro. Then in 2022, a friend reached out to me and invited me to a recording camp. I met my team there and we’ve been cooking ever since.
What were some pivotal moments that shaped your artistic path up to this point?
I’ve had quite a lot of experiences, working on the soundtrack of Stella Damascus’s book “Mama It’s a Girl”; and meeting Don Jazzy and hearing his thoughts on my sound. But, out of them all, what changed things for me was understanding my purpose as an artiste. It’s a story I hope I get to tell soon, but I’m gonna tell you what I found out on this journey — my music is a by-product of my self-actualization and realization, it’s about finding myself. Understanding this was my awakening.
How do you see your music evolving from the days of uploading covers on the internet to releasing ‘In Ways’ and now, ‘Don Simon’?
It’s crazy. Everything has evolved, especially my creative process — from my writing and my delivery to exploring the different textures of my voice — and you can hear it in both singles. With ‘In Ways’, I was a little fairy, very soft and somewhat innocent, but it’s a whole different energy with ‘Don Simon’. This new release is more sensual, fierce, and a little feisty. It’s me understanding my experiences, mastering all the versions of myself, and running with it. It’s a beautiful path I’m walking and it really shows me I can just about do anything I put my mind on.
What are your aspirations for the future?
I’m going where the path takes me, music is showing me a lot about life and I’m here to live and experience it one record at a time. I do have a destination, but the phase I’m in right now is just watching myself evolve, loving the journey, and enjoying the process.
Your music has been described as fun, youthful, and energetic. What are the sources of inspiration that drive your sound and style?
Ohhh, it could be anything, I could be listening to music that gives me a nostalgic experience. It could be a movie I watched or a memory/ experience I’ve had. Sometimes my music is my self-affirmation. It’s Mösirè talking her talk and reminding herself and everyone else who she is. However, it’s always me trying to express a feeling.
Despite your upbeat sound, all artists face challenges. What are some obstacles you’ve encountered recently in your career, and how have you overcome them?
I’d say it’s the fact that my style isn’t mainstream. It’s not your regular sound and to be honest, it did affect my willingness to want to create. However, I eventually overcame that by remembering why I created music in the first place, which is self-expression, so I just do my thing. My music is for me and for anyone who can relate or is open to trying out a new experience.
Your music often resonates with themes of emotion and introspection. How do you balance vulnerability in your songwriting while keeping your music lively and engaging?
Everything works together, but the tempo of the song and the production plays a major role in driving the emotions of my songs, and I have my producers to thank for that. To be honest, we feed off each other’s energy. Once we get the direction we want, we open ourselves to the freedom of expression and exploration, and we just go where the energy takes us.
ABOUT ‘DON SIMON’
Could you tell us about the inspiration behind the song and its significance in your musical journey?
I was in a situationship with someone when I wrote ‘Don Simon’. So I was conversing with them and making it clear that they had asked for more than they could handle. See, if there’s one thing everyone should know about Mösirè: she says it as it is and stands on business. And this is significant in my journey as an artiste because I know who I am and won’t change that. ‘Don Simon’ is such a baddie song, it exudes an ‘if you can’t handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen’ type energy. And the message behind it is simple — be you and don’t ever dim your light for anyone who can’t handle it.
How does ‘Don Simon’ represent the essence of Mösirè as an artist today?
‘Don Simon’ affirms the audacity and fierceness behind the woman and artist that is Mösirè. I wanted to make it clear that I reaffirm the truth that being a woman should not be associated with being weak. Mösirè is daring, she’s assertive, she knows who she is and stands on it, and you can hear it all in ‘Don Simon’
If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
I have a lot to be honest, a whole lot, but if you know me you know top on the list is definitely Tems. She’s amazing, her music and energy speak to me. I remember a friend of mine Ella putting me on to ‘Mr Rebel’ in 2018, it was so clear. Her music and journey give me hope that you can do just about anything and I hold on to that. Seeing her growth is such a light and I tap into that.
Although the conversation with Mösirè was short, it was incredibly insightful. She is certainly one daring and incredibly talented artist and best believe the world will be in for a ride when (not if) her music goes mainstream.
