On this week’s edition of Soot Africa’s top picks, the male artists certainly took the cake. Of all the new releases we enjoyed, these five songs stood out the most. Coincidentally, they’re all by male singers and rappers. I’ll allow it though, in honor of the International Day of the Boy Child, it’s only right that the men should shine.
Boy Spyce – Relationship
What starts out as an eerie piano riff turns into an upbeat, soothing rhythm. On this Soot top pick, Boy Spyce sings about drinking alcohol and lighting a joint to drown out all his relationship woes. He paints a picture of being quite sick of relationships… “Only stress I want na bank alert. That’s why me no want relationship.”
Kizz Daniel – Shu Peru
No, this is not another variation of Fireboy’s Peru. As one of our Soot top picks, Shu Peru is every bit as catchy as you’d expect a Kizz Daniel song to sound. Its opening lines maintain an upbeat tempo right up to the close of the song. In my opinion, even though this might not be better than the Peru we all know, it’s certainly still a banger.
Naira Marley – Body
This next song made it to our Soot top picks because, well, it is undeniably catchy as hell. Naira Marley starts off with witty and intense imagery that draws the listener in. This song reminded me a lot of Naira Marley’s hit song with Busiswa, Coming. It could be a result of its naughty lyrics or fast tempo. Either way, this is certainly another classic Naira Marley hit.
Bnxn – Pray
From all indications, Bnxn is not shifting away from the spotlight anytime soon. With yet another new release this year, he sings about praying and putting in the work on Pray. I found his backup choristers particularly interesting. The addition of their harmonies to Bnxn’s prayerful lyrics will certainly compel various emotions from the audience.
Blaqbonez X Ludacris
Finally, on this week’s top picks, the song Blaqbonez promised would quite literally slap. I think he delivered. While I never saw a Blaqbonez and Ludacris collaboration coming, it didn’t sound out of place. As usual, Blaq delivers sublime verses and a fire chorus. The two certainly had chemistry on this track and it reminded me of how much I’d missed hearing Ludacris spit. What a time to be alive.
As difficult as it is to say (or write), that’s all for this week’s Soot top picks. While they may have not been the best releases, they definitely caught our attention for a reason. If you doubt this, maybe you should give the songs a listen and let us know what you think!
